Ok, going out on a limb here-making a semi official announcement that there will be forthcoming book. All those handouts I've been giving away in classes over the years are no longer going to be free- you'll have to pay for them. This is to promote the idea...Welcome to the Ministry of Layout!

Catching up on some movie watching...the Criterion disc of The Scarlet Empress, director Josef von Sternberg, starring Marlena Dietrich, is a lavish depiction of sex and deceit in the 18th century Russian court. It follows the the exploits of Princess Sophia as she evolves from trembling innocent to cunning libertine Catherine the Great. With flamboyant visuals and a cast of thousands, this ornate spectacle represents the the apex of cinematic pageantry....or so says the blurb.
There is lavish lighting in almost every scene, with alot of foreground elements thrown into silhouette by the light source; this gives an amazing sense of depth to the scenes.
Did a few sketches from it....
Have to say, though, after a while , every scene is like the next; as i have been saying in class at Sheridan, the elements of story and staging are supposed to make the audience feel emotion, but if it is the same emotion for every scene, esp. intense emotions, that will get tiring. Anyone think of movies they've seen like that?
